Description |
JAPANESE VERSION The first in SNK's long-running series of 2D fighters with a massive cast. The "hook" here was a 3-on-3 match instead of the 1-on-1 matches seen in Street Fighter and Fatal Fury. This meant players had to learn 3 characters' moves and balance their strengths and weaknesses. Unlike later installments, the teams are fixed (no mixing and matching), probably for balancing and storytelling. Later games in the series would provide special endings for homogenous groups. The first Fatal Fury actually used the phrase "The King of Fighters" as its subtitle, but this title sets itself apart and acts as a battle royale for SNK properties. Characters from Fatal Fury fight alongside those from The Art of Fighting, Athena, and Ikari Warriors all while introducing new ones unique to the series. Highlights include the atrocious USA team along with their atrocious names: Heavy D!, Lucky Glauber, and Brian Battler. The title cleaves closest to the standards of the genre of the time: heavy and light punches and kicks, without any strange gimmicks like plane-shifting. While rough around the edges, it clearly sets a tone for a new style of gameplay that would take the series up to the present. |
