| JAPANESE VERSION The last of the AES King of Fighters, this entry starts a new storyline and shifts up the gameplay significantly. For the first time, players can swap out team mates in the middle of battle--surely a feat for the long-in-the-tooth Neo Geo hardware, but great as a method to break up monotony. The character roster has been updated, too, including Garou: Mark of the Wolves characters (including the older Terry Bogard). A new (anti?)hero team is introduced, with weird gameplay mechanics. The ambiguously-gendered Ash was almost universally reviled by Western gamers, which is a shame. This is one of the best in the series and it left the Neo Geo hardware on a high note. WILD STORY: I won a copy of this from eBay and received delivery notifications from the USPS while living in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn. However, the game never showed up and no one in the Post Office could figure it out. I trudged back and forth through snowy, icy streets to that stupid post office for two weeks straight trying to figure it out. Eventually, I got the insurance money for the game but it was still a sad loss. |
