Description
Ruthless (with a capital 'RUTH') hori shooter. Visually very impressive, especially for a regular CD, with lots of parallax. There can be some severe sprite flicker (why did they make the moon a sprite?).

Levels require heavy memorization; unlike R-Type there is little room for improvisation. The aforementioned parallax is often used as a hint for what "lane" the enemies will come in. Enemies have very little in the way of a "tell" and so can be very difficult to predict.

You ship is able to boost in 8 directions; each boost adds "heat" to an onscreen meter (going into the red prevents a boost until it cools down). Mastering this feature is critical to success, and you will die a LOT before you start to grasp its intricacies.

Weapons range from the standard pea shooter, an advanced split version of the same, a green lighting bolt, and high damage/low ROF fireball. Relatively unique among shooters, the power-up icons rotate at 90 degree intervals, and the orientation when you pick it up determines how you will fire. The orientation of these pickups is CRITICAL to success!

You can also perform a charged shot--requiring you to pay close attention to the rapid fire settings--but overall I found the powered up shots to be virtually useless, unless I'm missing something.

The music is good, the sounds are pretty terrible. Of note is the nice little ditty that plays when pausing the game.

This game is EVIL but rewards practice, memorization, and mastery.
